Anyi is a mission found in Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom.

Briefing[]

A valuable product lies buried in the hills surrounding Anyi, for it is there that underground deposits of salty brine lay hidden. If the brine is pumped to the surface and evaporated in kettles under big fires, the product is crystallized salt. Surely it is a gift from the dragon! It is past time for the government to take control of this lucrative industry so that more people can enjoy the delicious flavor that salt adds to the daily meal. Go to Anyi, locate the salt deposits, and construct salt mines. Open trade with the distant cities of the Zhou kingdom, for most have already acquired a taste for salt that is not easily satisfied. Ceramics and bronze can be imported from Hao, for the hills of Anyi, though rich in many ways, lack these commodities.

Goals[]

  • Produce 28 canisters of salt in one year
  • Yearly profit of 1500
  • Treasury of 13,000

Summary[]

This is a nice short mission compared to the previous one. Unfortunately, the treasury goal means that you are going to need to make a lot of money exporting valuable goods and there is hardly any resources available here, creating a need to make a profit through taxation early on.

As mentioned in the briefing, you have been sent to Anyi so that salt can be extracted and used in the kingdom. Salt Mines produce a lot of salt per year, so only three need to be constructed in order to reach the salt goal, although they are expensive buildings and require a lot of workers in order to function properly. Fortunately, you don't need a lot of workers here, so try to keep the city small so that you don't run out of funds too early. Note that only Salt Mines and roads may be placed on the marshes. A salt industry will be needed early on, as several cities will call upon you to provide them with salt in a timely manner.

The main problem is that all the salt marshes are on the far side of the map, meaning that traders will need to go a very long distance in order to purchase the goods they need. Salt is a cheap export once it's running and it can be used as homage, since it can pile up rather fast. Since Anyang and Qufu are already trading when the mission begins, you can consider starting up a lucrative Carved Jade export, first importing the required Jade from Qufu and selling the finished product to Anyang. Your traders might get eaten by the Salamanders present on the map, but it's a risk to take and it shouldn't slow down trade very much.

It is recommended to keep the city small by not importing ceramics. If you are in need of workers, import ceramics from the city of Hao. There is no military to speak of, neither are there any requests for troops to other cities, so you don't need to bother building any forts here. If there is a severe unemployment problem, consider building additional salt marshes and a fort, if you are making weapons.

Be aware that there is a rather devastating earthquake around July 1018 BCE. It might vary, but it'll probably destroy most of your housing and likely a Salt Mine, which will probably slow down the city considerably.

You should have no trouble reaching the salt and profit goals. It may take a lot of waiting while income increases, both from taxation and exports, before you will surpass the 13,000 treasury goal that will probably be preventing you from completing the mission. Once complete, you'll have established a salt mining community in China!
