Thebes, alternatively called Founding of Thebes, is a mission found in Zeus: Master of Olympus. It is the first mission of the Zeus and Europa adventure.

Briefing[]

Follow a cow? The priestess from the Oracle said to follow a cow? A peculiar command, to be sure, but then the priestess is never wrong. She promised that great things would come to the person who follows her cow until it lays down to sleep, and then builds a city on the spot. This person will be able to achieve something that four powerful men failed to achieve and finally bring Europa back to Greece. The beautiful Europa was abducted years ago by a white bull and has not been seen since. And thus, the priestess' bovine-centric prophecy came to an end. The cow did not choose a very good spot. She fell asleep a short distance from a hideous multi-headed serpent that purportedly belongs to Ares. The monster is always ravenously hungry and eats everything that comes near him! Building a city here won't be easy, but the promised reward is irresistible!

Goals[]

  • Population of 1000

Summary[]

In the first mission of the Zeus and Europa adventure, you will begin the fledgling city of Thebes. By the end of the adventure, it will be a powerhouse of military and economic might. But for now, it has humble beginnings, with a struggle for money and the threat of the Hydra.

There are many locations for which to begin your settlement, but your best location is in the south, near the river fork. You will be able to utilise the meadow land on the central island for all food, fleece and olive oil production, while using the main landmass for all housing. The meadow land in the north is too far from most of the key resources of this map, and the meadow land in the west will be unusable later in the adventure.

Just a few months from starting the mission, the Hydra will appear in the marble quarry on the Eastern landmass. Don't bother trying to fight it right now: you can't summon any heroes who can defeat the Hydra, you have very few exports to make money and you can't build any elite housing.

Your immediate concerns are to provide some food to your citizens (in the form of wheat and/or cheese), as well as making fleece for export. In this mission, your only source of money is selling fleece to Libya, a distant trading partner, so you won't be making massive profits just yet. The fleece exports will be enough to keep you in the black while you build all the necessities to reach the population target.

Not long after the Hydra has appeared, the rival of Mount Cithaeron will become hostile and attack. As you will almost certainly have no military in the city, just bribe them away (the bribe will be very cheap) to avoid causing yourself any hassle with them in the future. Or if you feel that you have enough rabble and the difficulty is low, you can also fight the invaders.

Producing food may be tough in the first few years, but eventually, you will gain more people and workers to grow larger quantities of food to feed the settlement. You might find it productive to build a second housing block to help in boosting employment, which will also help when you tax your citizens.

Once the population has reached 1000, the mission is won!
